Are you THE G.O.A.T.? Lace up your sneakers and hit the court in this fast-paced, 3-point shootout game. Watch out for those airballs... you don't want our goat to laugh at you!
Project Brief
Coors Light approached us with a basketball-themed concept to promote their brand. The marketing team sought a series of "advergames" to complement their online contests and product offerings. If I recall correctly, this initiative was part of a larger campaign aligned with March Madness.
Challenges
The biggest challenge in Silver Shootout was trying to simulate a 3D environment on a 2D canvas. There were a number of calculations being performed every frame to determine the position of the ball relative to the basket. This "position" also impacted the size of the ball as it traveled away from the player.
We had to get creative with assets and layering so that, if the player was successful making a basket, the ball would appear to go through the hoop. This required the ball being layered between different elements of the rim and backboard.
Simulating physics in a game is always challenging, especially when the goal is to create a convincing sense of realism for the player. I believe we succeeded in that aspect, even if the occasional goat appears to mock you when you shoot an airball.
Conclusion
After navigating countless math problems and physics algorithms, Silver Shootout turned out to be a huge success, logging numerous plays following its release. The game was incredibly fun, and we made it a competitive challenge within the office to see who could achieve the highest score. I held that record for quite some time, and to my knowledge, no one from the team ever managed to break it.
